Screenlets is basically a widgets engine which run small applications on the desktop called widgets, it is written in Python and licensed under GPL. It was designed to run on Unix-like operating systems by 'Rico Pfaus', 'Helder Fraga' and 'Natan Yellin', targeting specifically to run on X11-based compositing windows manager like compiz.
The goal of the Screenlets base-classes is to simplify the creation of fully themeable mini-apps that each solve basic desktop-work-related needs and generally improve the usability and eye-candy of the modern composited Linux-desktop.
Actually these mini widgets are virtual representation of things lying/standing around on your desktop; such as clock, sticky notes, calculator, calendar, and many more possibilities. You can add widgets on your desktop without any hassle, choose widget on the screenlet you want to add to the desktop and click "Launch/Add" button on the left pane, you can also set 'Auto start on login' so next time your computer start it will load automatically.
