If you are sensitive about your digital data then you must know about Truecrypt(discontinued), a good utility which is no more available and not recommended to use because there are some security issues and won't be fixed. TrueCrypt was initially released as version 1.0 in February 2004, based on E4M (Encryption for the Masses). Several versions and many additional minor releases have been made since then, with the most current version being 7.1a, released 7th of February 2012. On 28th of May 2014, the TrueCrypt official website, began redirecting visitors to truecrypt.sourceforge.net and telling users to use BitLocker.
After end of life of Truecrypt, we see many forks of Truecrypt came as alternatives. Veracrypt is one of them and seems promising to continue development of the product. All issues have been addressed in Veracrypt which were found in Truecrypt and many others, since it is in development we see releases of Veracrypt from time to time, the most recent release of Veracrypt was on August 9th, 2015.
VeraCrypt is a free disk encryption software brought to you by IDRIX and based on TrueCrypt 7.1a. VeraCrypt picks up from where TrueCrypt left and it adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks. It adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks. It also solves many vulnerabilities and security issues found in TrueCrypt.
This enhanced security adds some delay ONLY to the opening of encrypted partitions without any performance impact to the application use phase. This is acceptable to the legitimate owner but it makes it much harder for an attacker to gain access to the encrypted data. VeraCrypt also solves many vulnerabilities and security issues found in TrueCrypt. It can load TrueCrypt volume and it offers the possibility to convert TrueCrypt containers and non-system partitions to VeraCrypt format.
You can get more detailed info about the Veracrypt on wikipedia

Veracrypt Ubuntu Linux

There is also an unofficial PPA available, which can be used in Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid/14.04 Trusty/Linux Mint 17.x/17/and other Ubuntu derivatives (This PPA is not even endorsed by authors of VeraCrypt).

What's your favorite encryption tool?
TrueCrypt was initially released as version 1.0 in February 2004, based on E4M (Encryption for the Masses). Several versions and many additional minor releases have been made since then, with the most current version being 7.1a, released 7 February 2012. TrueCrypt supports Microsoft Windows, OS X and GNU/Linux operating systems. The version for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP can encrypt the boot partition or entire boot drive.

TrueCrypt is discontinued source-available freeware utility used for on-the-fly encryption (OTFE). It can create a virtual encrypted disk within a file or encrypt a partition or (under Microsoft Windows except Windows 8 with GPT) the entire storage device (pre-boot authentication). On 28 May 2014, the TrueCrypt website announced that the project was no longer maintained and recommended users to find alternate solutions.

Good News:
TrueCrypt has now been forked by some developers in Switzerland and they will continue this project. They are promising that all security issues will be addressed and fixed, so no one can force them to abandon this project.
"Currently it is very unclear what really happened. Was it really just the end of a 10year effort, or was it driven by some government. While a simple defacement is more and more unlikely we still don't know where this is going. However the last 36 hours showed clearly that TrueCrypt is a fragile product and must be based on more solid ground. We start now with offering to download the Truecrypt file as is, and we hope we can organize a solid base for the Future,"

First Audit Report:
Many users are worried about Truecrypt that isn't secure, me too I am using Truecrypt to encrypt some external HDDs.
First audit report of Truecrypt is prepared by iSEC partners, Inc. for Open Crypto Audit Project (OCAP) and released to public, they just finished Phase I

Now Phase II begins on the formal cryptanalysis.

Further goals of audit process:
  • Resolve license status on the current (v. 7.1a) TrueCrypt source code (license v. 3.0 ) copyright & distribution, in order to create a verified, independent version control history repository (signed source and binary)
  • Perform and document repeatable, deterministic builds of TC 7.1a from source code for current major operating systems:
  • Windows 7
  • Mac OS X (Lion 10.7 and Mountain Lion 10.8)
  • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 13.04, RedHat 6.4, CentOS 6.4, Debian 7.1, Fedora 19
  • Conduct a public cryptanalysis and security audit of the TC 7.1a

Truecrypt Must Not Die, Hopefully Truecrypt.ch will continue this project.

Lockdown: Secure Your Data With True Crypt

Encryption is the process of protecting data by using an algorithm to scramble it.
This manual will be talking about local file encryption - that is, encrypting files on a hard drive (or encrypting the entire hard drive; more on that later). The files are safe as long as they are kept in the encrypted area. TrueCrypt is a free, cross-platform program (meaning that it works in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux distributions including Ubuntu) that you can use to encrypt your data. It is classified as "On The Fly Encryption" (OTFE) software, which basically means that it encrypts and decrypts files as you access and modify them and that all files within the area of encryption are available as soon as you enter the key.
You can install TrueCrypt from here or download from official site.

TrueCrypt is an app that creates a virtual volume which is encrypted, and it allows user to keep private information safe. TrueCrypt for Ubuntu comes with the tray icon which displays on the panel. Installing the TrueCrypt isn't necessary on the system you can download from official site and use it as portable application but it is better to install under Linux if your system drives are encrypted with it.
It is user friendly program and very easy to use, just need little bit knowledge about file-systems and volumes. It offers two options to create encrypted standalone file which can contain many files depend on the size of encrypted file set by user, other option is to encrypt non-system drive so all data under this drive will be encrypted (Beware it will completely destroy your data if you have something on your drive).
For strong encryption use AES encryption with SHA-512 Hash algorithm and choose password which contains numbers, symbols, upper/lower case letters and should be 20+ character long.
