Now a days most of the Linux desktops have their own Menu/launchers with search option like Ubuntu Unity has Dash, Gnome has Activities, KDE and Cinnamon has its own Menu, and so on. Launchers are used to search applications/files quickly as possible on finger tips. In past when Gnome didn't had Activities Menu then there was application Gnome-Do which still exist for current Linux versions but not widely used now and Gnome-Do is not been actively developed for a while. Native launchers can give you performance but if you want step forward and looking for an alternative for your Linux desktop then Synapse comes in handy.

Install Indicator-Synapse (Alternative of Mac Spotlight) in Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy/Ubuntu 13.04 Raring/Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal/Ubuntu 12.04 Precise

Indicator Synapse, a search indicator made by Tom Beckmann for elementary OS. The indicator is similar to Mac OS Spotlight. It creates virtual index of files and items which are on the system. It is designed to access files and items quickly. It also has ability to search in online dictionary/knowledge engine (WolframAlpha) and web. It is still under development you may face any bug while using it. Now indicator-synapse is available in our Apps PPA. You also can transform your Ubuntu to Mac. Previously we shared a great handy tool synapse launcher.

Note: It only works with Unity and Gnome Classic.

To install Indicator-Synapse in Ubuntu/Linux Mint open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:
After installation logout and login back to see indicator in panel.
There is shortcut key Alt+Super+Space I tested but it doesn't work. You can use Alt+F10 and use left/right arrow keys to move to indicator-synapse.

Install Synapse launcher in Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy/13.04 Raring/12.10 Quantal/12.04 Precise/11.10/11.04/10.10/10.04/Linux Mint 15/14/13/12/11/10/9/Ubuntu Derivatives

Synapse is a semantic launcher written in Vala that you can use to start applications as well as find and access relevant documents and files by making use of the Zeitgeist engine.

  • Applications – searches your desktop files
  • Banshee – allows you to play/enqueue music files in Banshee
  • Commands – runs any command (ie. “sudo apt-get update”)
  • Devhelp – search documentation using Devhelp
  • Dictionary – find definitions of words
  • Directory search – allows opening of commonly used directories
  • Gnome session – log out, shut down, restart
  • Hybrid search – complete Zeitgeist results by searching for similar files
