Krita is a KDE program for sketching and painting, although it has image processing capabilities, offering an end–to–end solution for creating digital painting files from scratch by masters. Fields of painting that Krita explicitly supports are concept art, creation of comics and textures for rendering. Modelled on existing real-world painting materials and workflows, Krita supports creative working by getting out of the way and with a snappy response.

Install Flat and Photoshop themes for GIMP (version 2.8/2.9) in Ubuntu/Linux Mint/any Linux distribution
1: GIMP Flat themes
Flat GIMP themes were designed to make GIMP modern image editor like Photoshop. Many people don't like GIMP default icon theme/look and want to change it with something else, so here comes 8 variants which includes: dark, light, darker and also variants with small fonts. Using these themes you can make Gimp experience better and eye catching. Flat themes are in active development, so if you encounter any bug or problem with themes then you can report to creator. I uploaded these themes to my ubuntuone account, so you can easily pull from there using commands. The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program, a sophisticated image and photo editor. The GIMP is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. Changes in GIMP 2.8.10:
Changes in GIMP 2.8.10:
- Added 'Windows→Hide docks' menu item that does what 'Tab' does and also displays its state, which is now persistent across sessions, too.
- Added infrastructure allowing to embed user interface elements on the canvas. This is currently used for text styles in the text tool, and (experimentally) when a color correction tool is invoked while the canvas is in full-screen mode.
- To make dock window titles manageable, only show the active dockable in the dock window title.
- The layer modes have been rearranged into more logical and useful groups based on the effect they have on compositing of a layer. Layer modes that make the composite lighter are in one group, layer modes that make the composite darker in another group, and so forth.
- You can now Alt+Click on layers in the Layers dialog to create a selection from it. Add, subtract and intersect modifiers Ctrl, Shift and Ctrl+Shift keys work too. This makes it easy to compose contents of a layer based on the contents of other layers, without detours.
- New docks are created at the pointer position.
- Removed Toolbox from list of Recently Closed Docks, handle that directly in the Windows menu.
- Allow closing the toolbox without closing the whole application.
- Default to non-fixed-aspect in Canvas Size dialog.
- In the Preferences dialog, only have one setting for the window hint for both the toolbox and the docks.
- Support arbitrary affine transforms of brushes.
- Got rid of the Tools dockable and move toolbox configuration to Preferences.
- A question that often arises is how to change the UI language in GIMP, which has traditionally been a bit cumbersome. Not any longer, it is now possible to change the language in Preferences.
- Added 'Lock content' button to the layers, channels and paths dialogs, made the lock buttons more compact.
- Allow renaming list items with F2.
- Allow binding arbitrary actions to extra mouse buttons.
- Allow specifying the written language in the Text Tool. This helps with choosing an appropriate font, or appropriate glyphs for the selected language.
- Moved 'Text along path' from tool options to the text context menu.
- Add diagonal guides to the Crop Tool.
- Support rotating brushes.
- The Smooth Stroke feature from GIMP Painter was ported to GIMP.
- Added 'Rule of fifths' crop guide overlay.
- Added an icon for the Desaturate tool.
- Support loading 16bit (RGB565) raw data.
- Added palette exporter for CSS, PHP, Python, txt and Java, accessed through the palette context menu.
- Support printing crop marks for images.
- Made the Pointer dockable show information about selection position and size.
- Replaced the brush scale control in tool options by a brush size one that works in pixels, and does the right thing when the brush changes.
- Improved the Free Select Tool on-canvas feedback.
- Made it possible to use GEGL for scaling images.
- Bug fixes.

In our age of visual communication, design software programs have become a necessity. If you weren't fortunate enough to have the hook-up for a pirated version of Photoshop, or better than that, deep pockets allowing you to purchase the Adobe Creative Suite, well, you were out of luck.
That is, until the lovely creators of Linux came out with the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), but even then, Mac users have had to install 11X just to run GIMP on their Mac OS, until now. GIMP recently released version 2.8.2 and it's better than good — it's great! No more downloading programs just to use the free open-source program you've grown accustomed to. You might have to do a right click to get around OS X Mountain Lion's gatekeeper, but beyond that, once you've place it in your applications folder and opened the program, you're flying first class all the way, and for free.
Granted GIMP isn't the kind of program you'd use as a student working toward getting a graphic design degree, but if you want to do professional-level image touch-ups, resize and crop images and create simple designs, then GIMP is the graphic-design program for you.
Here are a few other things we love about this latest version of graphic design goodness.
This latest version is practically bug free. All the things that once frustrated users have been fixed, proving once again that good things come to those who wait. While the wait was longish, loyal GIMP users will be happy to know many memory aspects of the program are corrected, such as JPEG saving options, slow canvas redraw issues and showing incorrect file sizes on Windows OS platforms. After numerous complaints about slow download time on Windows and issues with image saving, Linux finally heard you and has found a way to give users of both Windows and Mac what they want.
Now that GIMP is available for fast download on both Mac and Windows, you can open and work on a raw file from anywhere that can download GIMP. The ability to save a GIMP file on a CD, memory stick, USB flash drive and even on the Xbox 360 is something you can't do even with a pirated Photoshop Suite.
If all you need or use are the basics in graphic design and image editing, then GIMP offers all the tools required to produce professional work. Print shops require you use CMYK and sometimes TIFF files, which you can find in GIMP. Plus, Linux offers easy to understand tutorials if you run into any issues making images camera ready for a print shop.
If you have issues with the program or downloading the latest version, contact a support representative and you should get a response in timely fashion. Programmers at Linux want to convert new users and talk with current users about the operating system they love.
