Double Commander is a powerful open source & cross platform file manager, inspired from total commander file manager but includes new ideas and features. It brings dual pane side by side experience to enhance the use of GUI for the user. The main window of the application is separated by two panels side by side that allow you to view the content of two different location or same and browse through folders with ease. For each file, image or folder, details such as name, extension, size, date and attributes are displayed in the list.
The most important function of Double Commander is that it can compress/pack files to many popular formats like ZIP, LZMA, TAR, BZ2, TBZ, GZ and TGZ you can select compression method you want to pack. Using this file manager create symbolic or hard links, change the timestamp properties and the attributes, view file properties and calculate the occupied space by a specific file. You can also compare two different files by their content side by side, change the encoding format for each one and view all identified differences. This feature is very useful for users who need to compare two documents with identical content, but still contain few different words or sentences. Use search function of Double Commander you deeply search for specific file, text, even using creation of date and file mask.
The advanced features include a multi-rename tool, directory comparison, full-text search, customizable fonts and colors, hot key shortcuts, custom toolbars, file/folder ignore lists, integrate archive support, file operations logging, and more. Double commander offers most of the operations within it's ground like terminal, network operations, text editor, archive packing support, search function, Tabs, and many more. Double Commander also supports Total Commander plug-ins (WCX, WDX and WLX) which enables you to further extend the features with third party add-ons.

Nemo is a complete forked from Nautilus file manager by Linux Mint team for their distribution and its goal is to extend and enhance the user experience to the Cinnamon desktop and file management. Nemo has features like: compact view, all desktop icons, etc.., open in terminal and open as root, file operation progress while copy/move files shows percentage and details, has nice GTK bookmarks management, up/forward/back and refresh buttons, nice proper status bar, better search, invoke terminal within Nemo using Terminal extension, manage images in Nemo using image extension, extensions extend the usability of Nemo and it offers much more.

Sunflower is a twin pane, highly configurable, powerful and easy to use File Manager created for Linux with plugins support. It works with all desktop environments such as Gnome, Unity, KDE, Lxde, Xfce, Cinnamon, Mate, and others. It is open-source and developed using Python language, currently it is in active development and releasing stable versions, if you like this project then don't forget to contribute this project in anyway you like.
It offers two windows that implement an unusual concept by trying to integrate the command line with the file manager. The control concept is different from its competitors, as well: The Sunflower file manager makes intensive use of the keyboard.
Marlin is a lightweight file browser built from the ground-up to be responsive, simply designed and easy to use. Marlin is based on gtk3 and uses Gnome 3 technologies extensively and is built in C and uses vala for interface. Some key features of XFCE file-browser Thunar too are included to give it a certain slickness despite it being a File browser.
Marlin uses 'extended actions' to manage files. This service allows applications to request some extended actions for a list of files depending on their mimetypes and some other constraints. Any user can extend their applications by adding custom actions.

Install Pantheon File Manager in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty/13.10 Saucy/12.04 Precise/Linux Mint 16/13/other related Ubuntu derivatives

Pantheon File Manager is a simple, light, fast, powerful and forked from Marlin file manager. It is default file manager in Elementary OS and maintained by Elementary OS. It doesn't have too much functionality like Nautilus, it offers minimal graphical user interface but incorporates several features such as excellent management of previews, file properties, and so on detailed research. Pantheon file manager also has Dropbox and Ubuntu One plugins and it allows you to upload files in your web space and share it with others with context menu. Some other enhancements like subtle blue glow of the folder when cursor on over folder, single click open file/folder, multi-tab functionality, and from properties folder management that user can color tags the files/folders which complies with preferences.
Nemo is a complete fork of Nautilus and its goal is to extend the Cinnamon user experience to desktop and file management. Nautilus has dropped type-ahead find search since 3.6 version and now using recursive search to find files/folders under current directory and sub-directories, most users don't like this behavior of Nautilus. Many of them started using other file managers instead of Nautilus.
