Cairo-Dock, a fast and customizable desktop interface that takes the shape of docks, desklets, panel, etc, which can be used as alternative or addition to Unity, Gnome-Shell, Xfce-panel, and KDE-panel, is now at 3.4 version. It is designed to be light, fast and customizable, and is desktop-agnostic. It has a powerful DBus interface, to be controlled from a terminal or another application. Features can be added by plug-ins or applets, and applets can be written in C or in any language. Cairo-Dock has now a basic Wayland support.
Cairo-Dock sits in the centre of your desktop, allowing you to monitor and control your favorite apps: music players, chat messengers, twitter, torrents downloaders, RSS feeds, calendar/tasks, weather, mail checkers, etc, and a powerful task-bar.
Cairo Dock includes many plugins/applets such as: weather, clock, Messaging Menu, system monitor, keyboard indicators, custom icons, notification area, clipboard manager, and many other plugins.

There are plenty of free docks available for Ubuntu, here comes one with price tag. Developer of this dock asked me to checkout his application and I found it lightweight, fast, simple and easy to use dock, by using it you will get feeling of Mac OS X dock (used in Mac 10.6/10.7/10.8/10.9). You can easily manage files, folders and application on this dock.

DockBarX is lightweight dock/taskbar/panel replacement for Linux desktop which works as stand-alone dock (called DockX), as an Avant Window Navigator applet, as a Xfce4 panel applet, as a matepanel applet or as a legacy Gnome2 panel applet. DockbarX is a fork of dockbar made by Aleksey Shaferov and the DockbarX branch is developed by Matias Särs. DockBarX is free software and is licensed under GPL3.
It has features like autohide, dodge windowsm dodge the active window, Unity progress bars and badges support as well as dynamic quicklists.
Dockbar has a launchpad page. If you want to report bugs, translate DockbarX into your language or request features, you should do it there, if possible. It's still OK to report bugs and request features here as well, if you don't want to register a launchpad account. The launchpad page is for both vanilla Dockbar and DockbarX, so make sure to tag any requests or bug reports directed to DockbarX with "dockbarx".

Install Duck Launcher in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty/13.10 Saucy/12.04 Precise/Linux Mint 16/13/other Ubuntu derivatives

Duck Launcher is a Unity like dock and application launcher made for Linux. It is written using Python and Qt languages, it's goal is to increase productivity and be good looking. It allows user to access favorite apps easily on the dock, or all application can be accessed by clicking on the top icon of launcher. File System can be browsed easily with this dock without opening any file manager, this feature is still in development, so keep in mind that anytime problem can occur with this feature.
"Star" is kind of an extension of the file browser and the app launcher: you can choose any application, file or folder and add it. But these can be separated in blocks. Let's say you're a graphic artist, then you'll add a block named "Graphics" and add a few apps, like blender and gimp, and a folder where you store your files, and perhaps a file your working on right know.
Customization of this launcher is quite easy; you can change color, transparency, canvas width and so on.
Plank is the underlying technology for Docky and aims to provide all the core features while Docky extends it to add fancier things like Docklets, painters, settings dialogs, etc.

cairo dock 3.0

What's New in Cairo Dock 3.1?

  • various bug fixes and improvements
Core:
  • The dock now supports XRandr which should replace Xinerama and help the dock to manage multi-monitors.
  • Progress bars can now be customised (in the advanced mode of the configuration panel / 'Indicators' module).
  • We can drop .sh files into the dock to quickly create a new launcher.
  • The "Lock icons position" now only block the icons position but we can still add new launchers/files from the menu/file manager.
  • QuickList menu entries are now translated if it's available.
  • We can now launch the dock with '-W' (--metacity-workaround) option which is a workaround for window managers (e.g. Metacity) not handling the opacity correctly (if your subdock/dock/dialogues are invisible).
  • Window's actions have been merged into a single menu entry (right-click menu).
  • The default view now use all the screen space to avoid the jitter of the dock when it is resized (visible only if your window manager doesn't resize it correctly).
  • Labels in vertical dock now ends with a gradation.
  • The dock now supports animated images with variable rate (have a look to the new 'Busy' animation when the Weather applet is downloading data or when you're uploading files with the 'Drop to Share' applet).
Plug-ins:
  • Clock: We can now easily add a new task by doing a right click on the calendar.
  • Drop to Share: Supported text files (now it uploads the content of text files to servers like pastebin).
  • Applications Menu: used gio to launch the menu entries, so that the event is stored in Zeitgeist.
  • Mail: Improved the look of the icon and its dialogue.
  • MusicPlayer: Prevented displaying quicklists, since the applet already provides all the common actions for any player.
  • Notification Area: displayed the title, the label and the description (if they are available) on the label of the icon.
  • PowerManager: displayed the details of all batteries (and not only the first one) and modify the icon if the battery is removed/added.
  • QuickBrowser: Added drag support (e.g. to quickly drop file into GMail in order to join this file to the mail).

  • Added an option to have progress bars in a few applet (Sound Control, Wifi, PowerManager, etc.).
Other Changes:
  • A new 'third-party' applet is available: YoutubeDL to easily download Youtube videos (thanks to Brian).
